Eurocamp told to drop plans for name change

AIRTOURS is demanding that Eurocamp drop its proposed name change to the Holidaymaker after complaining it clashes with its own branding.

At an extraordinary general meeting on Christmas Eve, the camping specialist agreed to delay the change to study Airtours’ intervention.

Eurocamp chief executive Richard Atkinson said:”We have copyright of the Holidaymaker name and it is registered with us but the question of passing off has been raised.

“We are using the Holidaymaker as a corporate rather than a trading name and we believe we are in the right.”

Atkinson declined to say what action the group will decide on when the issue is discussed at its annual general meeting on February 10.

“Like Airtours, we would like this to be resolved as quickly as possible and do not want the time or expense of a protracted court battle,” Atkinson admitted.

Sources believe Eurocamp may drop the name rather than face a legal challenge.

Airtours group finance director Tim Byrne said the phrase ‘The Holiday Makers’ is a recognised part of the Airtours brand name.

“Going Places and Airtours are both known as the Holiday Makers. We believe it is inappropriate for Eurocamp to use it,” he said.

Byrne said Airtours would take legal action against Eurocamp if necessary.
