IATA authorises research into 2000 measures

The International Air Transport Association has commissioned PriceWaterhouseCoopers to establish the extent of year 2000 compliance among the world’s airlines and air-traffic control facilities.

The world’s busiest airports, under scrutiny along with all air-traffic control facilities, although the Air Transport Associations of America and Canada will be responsible for those in North America.

The study, which will not be made public, is the final stage of a £12.5m programme by IATA to ensure appropriate measures are in place to protect against the millennium bug.

IATA spokesman Tim Goodyear said: “This is confidential information we are collecting so our members can see whether a facility will be ready before January 1.

“Our main concern is safety. If an airport does not have a robust programme in place to ensure compliance, we will have to make arrangements for airlines to fly into adjacent airports,” he added.
