Later discounts include 30% off domestic rental rates on weekdays, 20% off domestic weekend rates and 10% off overseas rates. The reductions are available on selected rentals.

Budget sales and marketing director Roddy Graham said the card was targeted primarily at people who hire cars a couple of times a year.

“Budget Max is ideal for city dwellers who do not own a car,” he said. “They would look through the Yellow Pages for the best price. The Budget Max card encourages loyalty and gives benefits to regular renters.”

Other advantages of the card include a 15% discount on standard room rates at Comfort, Quality or Clarion hotels in Europe and 10% at these hotels in Scandinavia.

Card users will automatically be entered into Perfect Drive, Budget’s global rewards programme, under which members are awarded a point for every Euro they spend on car rental. Points are then exchanged for goods including luggage, sunglasses and golf equipment.

BUDGET UK has launched a membership discount card called Budget Max that offers users discounts on car-hire bookings.

Customers will be charged an annual membership fee of £30 for the card, which will be distributed for sale through travel agents.

Agents will not get commission on this transaction but they can claim commission on bookings made by card users.

The Budget card gives members a £20 discount on their first weekly car rental and £10 off their first weekend rental.
