International traffic lifts UK airport figures
UK AIRPORTS handled 6% more international passengers in 1999 over 1998, while air transport movements increased by 5%, according to new figures released by the Civil Aviation Authority.International passengers at London airports increased by 6.7% last year, mainly due to the expansion of low-cost carriers at Stansted, where the amount of passenger traffic soared by 42%.
The overall number of UK air transport movements (takeoffs and landings) increased by 5% last year.
Within Western Europe, scheduled passenger traffic increased by 9% compared to the previous year, while charter traffic nudged up by 2%, according to the figures.
Referring to UKholiday destinations, passenger numbers to Greece showed the greatest increase, rising by 18% to 5.25m.
The greatest decrease was in passenger numbers to Turkey, which dropped 17% on 1998 figures to 2.03m – as a result of the earthquakes and political problems.
Average delays to charter services decreased from 36mins in 1998 to 34mins last year, while delays to scheduled services were unchanged at 13mins.
