Virgin Atlantic has opened a new Clubhouse lounge at JFK International Airport. The new lounge for Upper Class passengers is airside at the airport’s terminal one. Meanwhile, Virgin has named its start-up Australian low-cost airline Virgin Blue. The carrier is due to launch next month from its Brisbane base to Sydney and Melbourne.

Alitalia is looking to join a new alliance after KLM terminated its partnership with the Italian flag carrier. KLM claimed the slowness of development at Milan’s Malpensa airport and Alitalia’s privatisation were major reasons for the relationship’s breakdown.


n thistle hotels makes appointments


Thistle Hotels has appointed Stephen Young and Stuart Burnett as finance director and chief operating officer respectively, replacing Hartley Sutcliffe and Andrew Bould.


n ryanair strikes deal with sabre in europe


Ryanair has agreed a distribution deal with Sabre, starting May 14. Distribution will be restricted to Europe, where Sabre-affiliated travel agents will be able to check Ryanair flight schedules, make bookings on the airline and issue tickets.


n loud aircraft to be penalised at stansted


Stansted Airport has introduced new landing charges penalising noisier aircraft. Types affected include Boeing 737s, B747s and DC-10s.
