Climate activists force temporary suspension of Frankfurt airport flights

Climate activists forced the temporary suspension of flights at Frankfurt airport early this morning (Thursday) as they staged a demonstration near its runways.

Germany’s busiest airport issued a travel advisory on X/Twitter asking them to check their flight status and allow for extra travel time.

“Due to a police operation, air traffic had to be temporarily suspended,” the airport said.

“Currently, flight operations are gradually resuming.

“We ask all passengers to check their flight status on their airline’s website before travelling to the airport.”

A police spokesperson was quoted by news agency AFP as saying:  “We are doing everything to remove the climate activists from the tarmac.”

Climate activist group Letzte Generation (Last Generation) said six of its members had used pincers to cut openings in the wire fence before making their way “by foot, with bicycles and skateboards to different points around the runways”.

A photograph circulated by the group depicted a protester sitting on the tarmac with a banner “oil kills”.

Germany’s Cologne-Bonn airport, the country’s sixth-largest, suspended flights for a period on Wednesday after climate activists glued themselves to a runway, while similar actions at other European airports were foiled by authorities.

Last Generation had said it wanted the German government to pursue a global agreement to exit oil, gas and coal by 2030.

The group said “similar peaceful, civil protests at airports” were planned across Europe and North America.
