Travellers to and from France face fresh disruption from today (Tuesday) in the latest round of union protests against pension reforms.
Airlines operating to the country and in French airspace to other destinations will be affected together with ferries and rail connections .
The general strike has triggered travel warnings from the likes of Jet2, easyJet, Ryanair, Eurostar and P&O Ferries.
Eurostar introduced a reduced timetable for today and tomorrow with eight train cancellations each way between London and Paris plus others to Brussels, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
Six trains from London to the French capital on March 8 have also been cancelled together one to Brussels and four from Paris to London.
The Channel Tunnel high speed passenger train operator cautioned that the general strike will involve disruption across multiple sectors, including national rail services “and it will have an impact on the availability of some of our crew”.
There will also be reduced opening hours on the high-speed line used in northern France.
Jet2.com said the industrial action supported by the air traffic control service in France would run until early on Friday morning.
“This means that flights operating to or through French airspace may be delayed,” the airline said. “If you’re affected, rest assured we’ll try to keep any disruption to a minimum. Please arrive at the airport at least two hours before your departure time. Check-in closes 40 minutes before a flight’s scheduled departure time.
“If you are on a Jet2holiday, your transfer remains unaffected and will collect you at your scheduled collection time.”
EasyJet said the involvement of air traffic control staff in the national strike would hit all airlines using French airports as well as those flying in the country’s airspace until 7am local time on Friday.
“We expect that there will be delays and some disruption due to the industrial action, therefore we advise all customers to check the status of their flight on our flight tracker,” the budget carrier said.
“Please also be aware that public transport services may be affected by the strike. We recommend all customers allow plenty of extra time to get to the airport and consider alternative transport options where possible.”
Ryanair also issued an alert about air traffic control flight disruption and said: “We are expecting possible cancellations or delays on flights to/from France on March 7 and March 8. Any affected passengers will be notified as soon as possible.”
P&O Ferries said: “Due to national action in France on March 7 we anticipate disruption to our services. It is recommended that all non-essential travel is rescheduled to an alternative date.”
More than 260 demonstrations are expected across France today with up to 1.4 million people expected to attend, a police source told the AFP news agency.
