Qatar Airways’ chief executive steps down after 27 years

Qatar Airways Group chief executive Akbar Al Baker will step down from his current position from November 5.

The airline group said Al Baker (pictured left) will be succeeded by Badr Mohammed Al-Meer as group chief executive (right).

Reports said he is currently chief operating officer of Hamad International Airport at Doha, the capital of Qatar.

In a statement, the airline group said Al Baker has had “27 years of remarkable service” as chief executive.

“Under [his] leadership, Qatar Airways has grown to become one of the most recognisable and trusted brands globally, synonymous with customer service quality and the highest of standards,” said the statement.

“The national carrier of the state of Qatar has achieved an unprecedented seven-times win of the ‘World’s Best Airline’ award, and its state-of-the-art Hamad International Airport, which is under its management and operation, has also been recognised as the ‘World’s Best Airport’.

Qatar Airways flies to more than 160 destinations, connecting through its Doha hub, Hamad International Airport.
