Nowhere does winter quite like Canada, so visitors can expect a warm welcome from the city’s festivals

There are plenty of reasons to embrace Canada in the winter. As the snow falls and lakes freeze over, its biggest cities come alive with celebrations to mark the most magical time of the year.

January and February are when some of Canada’s most iconic festivals take place. Quebec Winter Carnival marks its 70th year in 2024, with an ice palace, nigh parades, canoe races and more, across 18 days.

Elsewhere in Quebec, Igloofest Montreal welcomes some of the most famous electronic music DJs to Quebec’s largest city in mid-January. Meanwhile, Canada’s capital Ottawa hosts Winterlude, a family-friendly festival where the ice-skating rink is the main attraction.

Further west in Manitoba, Festival du Voyageur takes place in February and about 90,000 people attend the francophone event, where stages host performances and activities that put arts, including Indigenous arts and traditions, at the centre.

Those who want to brave the cold can head north to the Yukon, to take part in the Tahini Hot Springs Hair Freezing Contest. When temperatures plummet to below -20C, participants create funky hairdos from the spring water that freezes in their hair.

From powdery slopes to dazzling lights, Canada’s winters offer thrilling adventures and festive celebrations

Canada is the ultimate playground for snow seekers, offering the thrill of winter sports, dog sledding and hiking against the backdrop of majestic mountains and sparkling lakes.

For clients seeking serenity on their winter holiday, suggest ice skating on Lake Louise, while those who travel to Yukon and the Northwest Territories can expect to be treated to the ethereal spectacle of the Northern Lights painting the sky with an enchanting display of colours and patterns.

Beyond the natural wonders of the rural regions, the cities come alive with festivals, including the Quebec Winter Carnival, the Winterlude festival in Ottawa, and the Festival of Lights at Niagara Falls, where ice sculptures, live music and fireworks form part of the holiday festivities.

“There are many activities in Canadian resorts catering to families and even non-skiers. Compared to Europe, Canada has a longer ski season and its slopes are quieter, providing plenty of space to practise without bumping into people,” says Emma Taylor of The Personal Travel Agents. “Always ask what ski/snowboarding level your clients are to help select the right resort for their ability level”.

A bustling waterfront on miles of coastline is just the start of a trip to Halifax, only one flight away

Walking along Halifax’s four-kilometre boardwalk is a real treat for the senses, passing delicious fresh seafood being served at restaurants, buzzing bars offering local beers on tap and pretty boutiques. Less than an hour’s drive away is the beautiful Peggy’s Cove, with its iconic lighthouse atop the rugged rocks. There are plenty of quaint villages along the coast, and lush green national parks on the way to the Cabot Trail, making Halifax an excellent gateway to a rural Nova Scotian adventure.

Beautiful colours coat the eastern Canada landscape in autumn, enticing travellers to its cities and national parks

Autumn in eastern Canada is a spectacular time of year. As the temperature starts to dip, much of the country bursts into a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges and every shade in between. With the summer peak season over, visitors can enjoy a quieter experience at popular sites.

Toronto’s iconic cityscape becomes even more picturesque as the Toronto Islands and High Park are bathed in warm hues. Over in the province of Quebec, Montreal’s Mount Royal Park and the charming streets of Old Montreal are perfect for leisurely strolls amid the stunning autumn foliage.

“Take a guided walking tour around Montreal and you will get to see the wonderful ‘Green Alleys’,” says Sue Kinton, team leader at Peakes Travel Elite. “In Montreal, more that 250 blocks have banded together to produce beautiful green spaces.”

For clients seeking to explore beyond the cities, suggest Ontario’s Algonquin Provincial Park – home to vast landscapes of maple trees draped in autumnal colours. Or recommend Quebec’s Laurentian Mountains, where the crisp air and comfortable temperatures make hiking, biking and kayaking delightful ways to enjoy the season.

June is National Indigenous History month and visitors can connect with the local cultures through Indigenous experiences

Indigenous tourism experiences are encouraged for those who take a trip to Canada. Whether it’s with Métis communities from the Prairie provinces, Inuit people from the Arctic region or with one of the more than 630 First Nations communities across the country, there are many ways visitors can engage with them.

From medicine walks and wildlife tours to art classes and Indigenous-owned accommodation, a range of rewarding experiences are found across Canada. Suggest your clients attend a Pow Wow – an Indigenous gathering where communities come together to honour traditions. Find out more at canadianpowwows.ca.

In the subarctic town of Churchill in Manitoba, natural wonders can be spotted on land, in the skies and at sea

In northern Canada, on the migration path of polar bears and beluga whales, the remote town of Churchill is a wildlife-viewing hotspot. Situated beneath the auroral oval, it also offers a nature experience of a different kind – here, the northern lights can be seen up to 300 nights a year.

This town offers a whole range of unique experiences, such as spotting polar bears in their natural habitat on the tundra. Booking with Frontiers North Adventures means you will travel in new electric vehicles, offering a sustainable, non-intrusive touring experience.

If you are looking for a water-based activity, try paddleboarding, kayaking or a boat tour – with Lazy Bear Expeditions’ newest vessel Matonabee – to view thousands of beluga whales that reside here.

To catch a glimpse of the northern lights dancing in the sky, you have a multitude of options, including heading out on a Tundra vehicle, or cosying up in a yurt in the boreal forest.

The phenomena of Churchill offer visitors to Manitoba an unforgettable experience – one that can be extended with a trip to Winnipeg, the province’s historic and culture-rich capital.

Canada’s breathtaking scenery, incredible driving routes and friendly locals shine on BBC’s Race Across the World

Have you been watching the BBC reality game show Race Across the World? From the verdant Stanley Park in Vancouver to the shores of the Atlantic in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada’s bustling cities, rural towns and diverse terrain are front and centre in this action-packed TV series.

The challenge sees five pairs of contestants race from west coast to east coast via various checkpoints. They must stick to a tight budget – the equivalent of the airfare – but can work along the way if their funds run low. And if you’ve missed it so far, all episodes are available on BBC iPlayer.

Starting in Vancouver, the pairs race to the remote Haida Gwaii archipelago in British Columbia. The next leg sees them dash to the Yukon’s Dawson City, a hub in the Gold Rush era, before heading to the jaw-dropping mountains in Banff and on to Churchill, on the shores of Hudson Bay.

Manitoulin Island in Ontario is next, before racers must find a way to the French-Canadian Quebec City. The final checkpoint is Liverpool in Nova Scotia to reach the finish line in St John’s.

Sound like a trip to remember? Catch up and inspire your clients with all that Canada has to offer.

The highest tides in the world are just the start when it comes to natural phenomena in New Brunswick

Along the east coast of Canada lies a hidden gem full of big adventures. Home to unspoiled coastlines, vast national parks and scenic drives, New Brunswick is awash with natural beauty.

The jewel in its crown is the Bay of Fundy, which boasts 16-metre-high tides – the highest in the world. This tidal marvel is best experienced from the Hopewell Rocks: visitors can walk along the seabed and get up close to the jagged cliffs when the waters recede, or view the cliff faces from a new perspective in a kayak when the tide is at its highest.

Visitors who hit the road will be greeted with stunning views of the Fundy Coastal Drive – and can look out for some of the rarest species of whales along the way! Elsewhere, the east coast’s Acadian Coastal Drive is home to a sand dune thriving with wildlife, including migratory birds. Stretching for seven miles, the dune is well worth a visit.

The awe-inspiring nature doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. The Kouchibouguac National Park on the east coast is a Dark Sky Preserve, where visitors can enjoy unparalleled views of the Milky Way – a stunning way to end a perfect day.

From the peaks of its mountains to the depths of its lakes, beautiful scenery can be found in all corners of Canada

With vast tundra stretching into the Arctic Circle, rugged Badlands across its interior and islands dotted around the Atlantic provinces, there’s a variety of terrains in Canada. But it’s important not to forget to stop at its biggest icons along the way.

It’s hard to beat feeling Niagara Falls’ spray as you sail towards its crashing waterfalls or seeing the jaw-dropping views of Banff National Park for the first time, as you explore the Rockies in the shoulder seasons.

In the Fraser Valley, just outside of Vancouver, guests can find beautiful hiking routes, while a short drive from Montreal are the Laurentian Mountains and a wildlife reserve, blanketed in bright colours in the autumn. Hitting the road in an RV is one of the best ways to get around.

“With the huge windows you almost get a 360-degree view of the countryside. Your customers can visit multiple destinations at a time and at a pace that suits them,” says Craig Goodridge of Independent Travel Experts.

“RV trips really are unforgettable and they’ll get to meet fellow travellers along the way who are warm, welcoming and happy to see them visiting Canada.”

Jump in the saddle to explore Saskatchewan’s great outdoors on horseback as part of a ranch holiday

It’s all about the great outdoors in Saskatchewan, with parks, plains and prairies stretching as far as the eye can see. Ranching has played an important role in the province’s development, and visitors can learn all about this way of life as part of their holiday. They can even get involved in ranch activities or help to look after cattle.

The Historic Reesor Ranch, for example, close to the Alberta border, offers guided horseriding and ATV tours, while guests at La Reata Ranch can also go riding or visit the ranch’s saloon to wind down with a drink, game of pool, and relax by the campfire.

But the province’s highlights stretch beyond its rural spots – its cities are well worth twinning with a ranch stay.

Saskatoon’s food scene offers the freshest farm-to-table experiences. The city is home to Wanuskewin Heritage Park, where visitors are immersed in First Nations culture. In Regina, mingle with locals at the Farmers’ Market or visit the RCMP Heritage Centre, where the story of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, is brought to life.

The Northern Lights displays in the Northwest Territories are unparalleled, and a road trip takes in the best sights of both its sky and land

The Aurora Borealis dance across the sky more than 240 nights a year in the Northwest Territories. Thanks to the region’s location, clear skies and low humidity, the Northwest Territories is one of the world’s most incredible spots from which to view this natural phenomenon.

The Northern Lights are at their best and brightest in autumn and winter, and a day trip led by ‘Aurora hunters’ is a great chance to see them in all their glory. But for those who want to stay longer, recommend an overnight stay at an Aurora lodge, where they can embark on an excursion before the lights come out to play.

The Northwest Territories is made for explorers. A road trip into its vast, remote and spectacular interior is a jaw-dropping experience. Highways wind through unspoiled wilderness, from the waterfall route in the south, along the famous Dempster Highway, to the Arctic Ocean, with pine trees, mountain peaks and wildlife lining the way.

The wide roads are easy to navigate too, with picnic sites and campgrounds dotted along the routes, plus visitor information and service stations on major highways. All that’s left to do is turn the key and go.
