Get creative in AlUla by exploring its artsy side

In the Saudi Arabian region of AlUla, breathtaking desert panoramas are home to centuries-old stories, interspersed with lush green oases.

But the beauty of this destination stretches far beyond its landscapes. There’s an evolving art scene across AlUla that fuses authentic, traditional works with contemporary pieces and performances.

Magical moments

The AlUla Moments calendar brings together the best of the region’s events and festivals, including unmissable exhibitions in arts and entertainment for visitors to enjoy.

A hotspot for these events, and a piece of artwork in itself, is Maraya. It’s the world’s largest mirrored building (pictured, below), according to Guinness World Records, and is located in the desert canyon of Ashar Valley.

Formed of nearly 10,000 mirrored panels, Maraya is also a multi‑use venue and has hosted global artists including Lionel Richie and Alicia Keys. It’s also home to Maraya Social, a rooftop restaurant that boasts far-reaching desert views and a fine-dining menu curated by British chef Jason Atherton.

For clients looking ahead to 2024, the Desert X AlUla event is set to take place during the AlUla Arts Festival from February 8 to March 2. Desert X celebrates international artists with large‑scale exhibitions (main picture) set among the majestic desert landscapes of AlUla.

Arty activities

There’s no better place to immerse in AlUla’s bursting creative culture than AlJadidah, a vibrant arts district situated between the Old Town and the ancient oasis, where colourful murals adorn the walls of shops, restaurants and galleries. It’s also home to the world’s largest hand-painted ‘urban carpet’, a collaboration between local artists.

Experienced artists and beginners alike can harness their creativity here, with free workshops suitable for all abilities and ages. With the aim of reviving traditional crafts and supporting local economies, AlUla’s first arts and design centre, Madrasat Addeera, hosts regular sessions that educate guests on the arts of jewellery making, embroidery and ceramics.
