Brazil reveals top motivators for UK tourists

Culture, weather and beach sun holidays are the key motivators for British tourists visiting Brazil.

The results of research by tourism agency Embratur came as the country reported an almost 18% year-on-year rise in UK arrivals to 81,200 in the first half of 2024.

The most popular destinations in the country were Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Foz do Iguacu and Amazonas.

UK-US tourism numbers still lagging behind pre-Covid levels

The Embratur study found that 42% of British tourists look for culture, 38% look for weather, and 31% are after beach sun holidays in Brazil.

Gastronomy (22%), nature (20%), Brazilian people (16%), others (10%) and business (3%) make up the list.

Overall first half international visitor arrivals were 1.9% above pre-pandemic 2019 levels at almost 2.6 million.

Total numbers this year are projected to surpass the 2018 record of 6.6 million.

Rio de Janeiro achieved its best result in a decade, receiving 760,200 international tourists in the first six months of the year, a rise of nearly 20%.

Foreign tourist spending also reached a historic high with $3.7 billion injected into the country’s economy through international tourism in the fist six months of the year.

Embratur president Marcelo Freixo said the country is reaping the benefits of rebuilding Brazil’s image abroad.

“Our job is to show the world the diversity of destinations and experiences we have in our country,” he added.

“We are a rich country and, in addition to sun and beach, we have nature, ecotourism, Afrotourism, gastronomy, culture and much more.

“People are coming here to see what we have to offer and telling others about the incredible experiences they have had here.”
