Summer loving for Cyprus as tourist numbers break records

A strong summer helped Cyprus achieve a record year for tourism in 2018 with overall arrivals up 7.8% to almost four million.

Numbers from the UK grew by 5.9% year-on-year to more than 1.3 million.

The UK maintained its position as the top source market for the country, accounting for 33.7% of arrivals, followed by Russia at 19.9%, Israel at 5.9% and Greece at 4.7%.

July was the busiest month with 539,626 global arrivals – including 175,904 from the UK – while August came a close second with 534,847 visitors.

The year ended with December inbound travellers rising by 7.7% to 106,563, including a 13.6% increase from the UK.

Christos Moustras, from the Cyprus deputy ministry of tourism, said: “We’re proud of achieving another record breaking year of visitors to Cyprus.

“Our beautiful island has so much to offer every type of traveller so it’s a not a surprise that nearly four million people chose to visit in 2018 to sample its Blue Flag beaches, rich cultural heritage as well as legendary hospitality and delicious cuisine.

“We look forward to offering visitors to Cyprus a warm welcome in 2019 and hope it will be yet another successful year for us.”
