US carriers waive change fees as winter storm hits

Airlines have waived rebooking fees as winter weather struck the Chicago area today and threatens the northeast of the US ahead of the Thanksgiving weekend.

United Airlines waived its customary fee for flight changes today with snow falling at Chicago’s O’Hare international airport (pictured).

The airline later added a similar waiver for travel through 23 north-eastern airports.

American Airlines and Delta Air Lines waived change fees for flights out of 18 and 19 airports, respectively, Bloomberg reported.

The six-day Thanksgiving holiday period, from tomorrow until Sunday, is the among the busiest travel times in the US.

Air passenger numbers are expected to rise to the highest level since 2007, totaling 3.55 million, a 3% increase on last year.

A storm is expected to dump as much as 6 inches of snow across northern portions of New York City tomorrow (Wednesday).

A winter storm watch is in effect for Wednesday and Thursday in parts of Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
