Salaries for new travel roles see November jump

Pay for new jobs in the travel industry rose at their fastest pace for nearly four years in November, latest research shows.

The average job in travel now comes with a wage of £25,955, a rise of 6.65% (£1,618) over October and the biggest monthly increase since January 2013.

Salaries rose across the country last month with London wages rising to their highest point since April, salaries in the south of the country reaching the highest level since May and northern pay hitting its strongest mark since July.

Salaries for standard travel roles, paying up to £40,000, stood at £22,973 in November, up 8.11% from the previous month and the highest figure since April.

Wages for executive travel jobs, paying more than £40,000, reached £57,333 – their highest point since July.

Barbara Kolosinska, director at C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment which complied the figures from a survey of the month’s new vacancies, said:

“November was a very strong month for wages in the travel industry with increases in all areas of the country from Brighton to London, Manchester, the West Midlands and Yorkshire.

“In particular, last month saw a large number of business travel consultant placements in Manchester and the north-west, and these roles are likely to continue to be attractive to top candidates seeking new positions with competitive salaries in the next few months.”

The month also saw a double digit annual rise in the number of candidates looking for roles in travel, although the number of new positions being made available in November dipped below last year’s levels.

“As we near Christmas and the holiday season, it’s encouraging to still see so many people searching for a new role before the end of the year,” said Kolosinska.

“December is typically the quietest month of the year for the travel recruitment sector, but it appears that many people will still be taking time out from the turkey to search for a new job this winter.”
