Los Angeles flights cancelled amid hurricane floods

A tropical storm watch has been issued for southern California as Hurricane Hilary struck Los Angeles.

Earlier, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake also struck the region as residents braced for the storm, but no major damage was reported.

Authorities urged residents to avoid visiting the city’s beaches – like Venice Beach – for three days after the storm, the BBC reported.

Los Angeles International airport advised passengers to check with their airlines before setting out to check if flights have been delayed or cancelled.

In updated travel advice, the Foreign Office said: “Tropical storm conditions are possible from Sunday 20 August in parts of Southwest USA, as a result of Hurricane Hilary.

“You should closely monitor local and international weather updates from the US National Hurricane Center and follow the advice of local authorities and the tour operator, including any evacuation orders.

“See the tropical cyclones page for advice about how to prepare for travel during hurricane season and what to do ahead of a storm.

“In the aftermath of a hurricane, there can be flooding, high winds and continued rainfall.”

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office previously said that Hurricane Hilary was moving north along Mexico’s Pacific coast after making landfall on the Baja California peninsula early on Sunday morning local time.

At the same time the FCDO warned that Canada is experiencing “a particularly severe” wildfire season.

Wildfires affecting several provinces and territories, particularly in Western Canada including North West Territories, British Columbia and Alberta.

“North West Territories and British Columbia have declared territory-wide and province-wide states of emergency,” the FCDO said.

“An evacuation of NWT’s capital Yellowknife is underway. Evacuation orders have been issued in other areas including parts of Kelowna in British Columbia.

“Wildfires are highly dangerous and unpredictable. The situation can change quickly.”
