Norwegian Air is to lease ten new Boeing 737 Max aircraft as its rebuilds its fleet following the pandemic.
The additions will give the Scandinavian low cost carrier a total fleet of 80 aircraft by the summer of 2023.
The lease agreements with aviation leasing firm Aer Cap also includes eight Boeing 737-800s, which are part of a 70-strong fleet set to operate this summer.
The airline previously announced several leasing deals to expand its fleet from the current 51 aircraft to 70.
Norwegian has the option to substitute certain aircraft with equivalent narrow-body models from Airbus for some of the aircraft under these agreements.
Chief executive Geir Karlsen said: “The addition of these aircraft will help us achieving our target of building a larger, modern and more fuel-efficient fleet.
“This will in turn enable us to deliver our products and services in a wide network of routes in the Nordics and to European destinations.”
The Boeing 737 Max 8 is about 14% more fuel efficient compared to previous-generation aircraft and will contribute to Norwegian’s target of cutting carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 over 2010 levels.
