Mundi Color Holidays is aiming to grow its sales to Portugal by 30% next summer after seeing an increase in business to the destination this year.
Ray Steward, manager of outgoing tour operations at Mundi Color Holidays, said the company had already seen a growth of 30 per cent this summer in spite of the negative publicity the destination has received following the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
To drive the growth, the operator has added two new cruises to its Portugal, Madeira and the Azores programme for 2008 while it is also offering four suggested wine tours which can also be tailor made according to the customer’s needs. They are based in the Douro, Alentejo and Estremadura regions.
Steward said: “I think this year agents have become far more aware of the fact that we are selling Portugal. In the past we have been victims of our own success as our Spanish programme was so strong that agents only associated us with that.
“Although the Madeleine case is very sad Portugal didn’t suffer and I think the coverage showed Portugal as a sympathetic country with a sympathetic people.”
